Job Summary Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, develops, prepares, and presents wildlife education and conservation programs to all age groups both on and off Zoo grounds. Demonstrates/possesses comprehensive classroom management skills. Communicates frequently with parents, schools, Zoo guests, and volunteers. Presents education animals in an informative manner. Registers participants for courses/programs, tracks participant registration and payments and utilizes online surveys for post visit evaluations from participants. Responsible for learning and operating sophisticated software programs and hardware including distance learning video-conferencing equipment, interactive displays, email, social media, computer communication, and other electronic equipment. Assists in the development and training with instructional manuals for docents, interns, and volunteers. Serves as a lead for certain programs and cross-trains in all areas including, but not limited to home school, distance learning, family programs, zoo-mobiles, Nature Play initiative, or birthday parties. Participates in animal training in conjunction with the Zookeeper assigned to education animal care. Implements operant conditioning techniques with supportive documentation. Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of the Zoo education building. Assists with organizing special events. Works evenings and/or weekend days. Essential Functions % of Time Teach Classes: Prepare the classroom or vehicle to be used. Move animals to the desired location (either classroom or vehicle). Present animals in an informative way to the students. Present wildlife education and conservation programs to all age groups both on Zoo grounds and off Zoo grounds, as well as comprehensive classroom management skills. 40% Perform Program Registration & Administrative Support: Register participants for courses/programs through information provided via mail, telephone, or the web. Track participant registration by maintaining and updating program/course spreadsheets. Invoice participants, and track payments. Utilize online surveys for post visit evaluations from participants. Effectively use email, social media, and other computer functions. 25% Plan & Develop Programs: Research, plan, and develop program options that are currently being implemented in other institutions for application at the Greenville Zoo. Create schedules and topics for each class taught. Plan crafts, scavenger hunts, or other activities for the class or event. Purchase materials needed for the class. Evaluate existing programs and update as necessary to remain valid and effective. 20% Train Animals: Maintain training logs and training plan for the animals in concert with the Greenville Zoo's Operant Conditioning Plan while working closely with the education animal care keeper. Work with animals concerning operant condition techniques. 10% Maintain Building: Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the Zoo education classrooms, offices, and other areas related to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. 5%Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Bachelor's degree in biology, nature science, or a related field. Over one (1) year of experience in working with children. At least one (1) year of teaching experience. Preferred Qualifications Animal handling experience. Driver's License Requirements Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License. Performance Requirements Knowledge of: Conservation issues, ecology, outdoor education topics, zoo keeping and/or biology. Acquisition, husbandry and behavioral training of different species, exotic and domestic animals. Safety principles for working with domestic and non-domestic animals. Comprehensive classroom management skills. Early childhood education principles and interpretive education techniques. Educational components of special events and the coordination and organization of special events. Distance learning video-conferencing equipment, interactive displays, social media, computer communication, and other electronic equipment. Ability to: Work directly with animals to present animal-based programs both on and off Zoo grounds. Participate in Zoo-provided comprehensive animal handling training and protocol. Safely handle animals, enter Zoo exhibits, and perform animal husbandry tasks. Research and implement curriculums for various age groups. Organize, plan, collaborate and implement educational presentations. Present and supervise engaging animal shows, classes, and other educational programs for all ages. Utilize a variety of communication and interpersonal skills to interact successfully with people at a number of levels inside and/or outside the organization including parents, schools, Zoo guests, and volunteers. Maintain a clean, safe and efficient work area. Work a flexible schedule including evenings, and weekends. Read, analyze, and interpret instructional manuals, education curriculums, animal training logs and training plans, and other documents used by the department. Calculate with a system of real numbers, prepare billing invoices and other documents. Write curriculums, class schedules, reports, prepare business letters, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner. Operate audio-visual equipment, projector, interactive equipment, iPad, hand tools, and small power tools. Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite. Utilize specialized software and systems to include a Point of Sale (POS) system, social media, Windows based programs, Internet research tools, and search engines. Working Conditions Primary Work Location: Office and classroom environment, off-grounds (zoo-mobiles, nature hikes), and outdoors (Zoo Camp and classes). Protective Equipment Required: Mask, goggles, and gloves. Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to noise and vibration. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, wetness and/or humidity, and respiratory hazards. Physical Demands: Continuously requires reading, handling, fine dexterity, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires standing, walking, carrying, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and bending. Occasionally requires sitting, lifting, pushing/pulling, twisting, and climbing. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Mental Demands: Frequently requires frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
