Job Description Camp - Equine Specialist SUPERVISOR: Equine and Property Manager DEPARTMENT: Strategic Initiatives FLSA STATUS: Seasonal LAST UPDATED: 03/22/2023 LEADERSHIP SUMMARY The Camp Equine Specialist will infuse and model the Girl Scout Law into their everyday work to fulfill the mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. POSITION SUMMARY The Camp Equine Specialist is accountable for implementing the equine program for all campers ranging from 1st to 12th grade during the resident camp program. They will be directly responsible for equestrian animal welfare and safety. MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES Serves as an on-site instructor for the equine program during resident camp Teaches equine sessions up to current CHA certification limits Provides daily care of equine animals including, not limited to, feeding, handling/applying medications approved by the council's veterinarian vendor, barn cleanliness and organization, and grooming Ensure safety checks are documented for barn and riding equipment regularly for quality control and safety purposes Assesses each rider's skill, comfort level, and ability prior to riding or beginning of each session Has a deep understanding of and performs equine equipment maintenance Ensures adequate level of equine resources such as feed, tack, and riding or barn equipment Adheres to property and risk management policies and procedures Documents feedings, medical treatment, and equine/program incidents Adheres to equine standards and requirements from Certified Horsemanship Association, American Camp Association, Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Red Cross and insurance carrier. KNOWLEDGE AND CREDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Required/Preferred Horsemanship experience required Experience working with youth required Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience preferred Equine physiology knowledge preferred ABILITY AND SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS Membership with GSUSA and subscribes to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement Demonstrate ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines. Strong human relations skills and ability to work well with others of diverse cultures Ability to exercise good judgment Excellent written and oral communication skills Solution-driven with the ability to effectively problem solve Ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds Ability to bend, stoop, and sit for extended periods Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures for extended periods SCHEDULE AND LODGING Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings Flexibility to live on the campsite during camp season The above job description describes employees' work's general nature and level.
